Numerical simulation for determination of temperature field and residual stress of stainless steel butt joints with and without clamping

Many welded structures are fabricated from stainless steels because these have good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. It is necessary to predict the residual stress after welding in order evaluate performance of joint. In this paper, butt joint AISI 316L steel plates studied. The Metal Inert Gas (MIG) process selected for material. A SYSWELD software based on Finite Element Method (FEM) used determine temperature field stresses two plates. simulation includes a sequential coupled thermomechanical analysis. elemental generation death technique utilized simulate metal deposition welding. double ellipsoidal heat source model input MIG process. distribution various time steps at some important points presented. Cooling times cooling rates over range 800 oC 500 determined. longitudinal transverse direction cases with without clamping obtained compared. Obtained results show that: case same as no clamping; only components important, other not important; middle weld line very high; greatly increased, so it limit reduce
